Cold Combating Garlic Toast Recipe

Nature’s Antibiotic! Strong claim. But, I’ve found it to be spot on. At the first sign of a cold, I start the garlic treatment. Garlic contains several compounds that possess antibacterial, anti-fungal and antiviral properties, earning its ‘nature’s antibiotic’ nickname.

Here’s the secret to getting the most benefit from this little powerhouse…use fresh garlic. Chop or use a garlic press to mash the cloves and then let them sit for 10 minutes. This allows the allicin – the magical component of garlic – to form. Then, sneak it into food in its raw form. I know…harsh. True. You don’t want to eat it alone. Not tasty!
That’s why I like to get sneaky and hide the raw garlic in my food. My favorite way to do this is in this garlic toast recipe. However, if you are dairy or gluten free,  you can make substitutes or simply add the garlic into another dish. Just remember, you want it to be fresh and add it in at the last minute, in order to get the most health benefits.

Garlic Bread on Steroids!

  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed and set out for 10 minutes (releases allicin, which is nature’s antibiotic)
  • 1 piece of toast (ideally something hearty like sourdough or Italian – feel free to use gluten-free bread)
  • Butter to taste
  • 1 slice of provolone cheese

  • After crushing garlic, let sit for 10 minutes
  • Toast and butter bread
  • Spread raw garlic evenly on toast and top with cheese
  • Put under the broiler until melted

And there you have it! You’ll smell badly, but likely feel better.

Fancy Add-Ons

  • Add some ham or turkey for an open faced sandwich
  • Use fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil to make a caprese cold-buster
